Welcome,
Class of 2017!
Overall,
the historical novel Caleb’s Crossing
resonated with me on several levels. Especially, I enjoyed the perspectives
into early American college life at Harvard, which primarily surfaces in the
second half of the novel. I teach at URI, so this area of interest isn’t too
much of a surprise, is it? This portion of the novel seems to speak to all of

Haiti: 31 months after the quake, 400,000 people still live in makeshift camps.
Whenever world news organizations mention Haiti in news reports, it seems as if it is only to focus on the newest catastrophe whether a natural disaster or political turmoil. After the earthquake of January 12, 2010 struck Port au Prince and killed more than 230,000 people and left 1.5 million people homeless, HaitiURI Common Readinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15313165129691969913noreply@blogger.com42tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8009431946049180948.post-28124283994890637882012-08-24T11:55:00.000-04:002012-08-29T15:04:43.073-04:00Meet Roger LeBrun—Professor with URI's College of the Environment and Life Sciences - Department of Plant Sciences and Entomology and One of the Coordinators of URI's Honors Colloquium!

Check out the article, "Years After Haiti Quake, Safe Housing Is a Dream for Many," by Deborah Sontag in the August 16, 2012 New York Times. It lays out how the reconstruction efforts after last year's earthquake have fallen far short of human need. What do you think?

Can you believe that we are one month away from the beginning of the semester? The above image is of URI's Director of Gender and Women's Studies Jody Lisberger relaxing on Block Island. As you can see, she has her copy of Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains.
